The San Francisco Zoo invites San Francisco residents to enjoy a free day at the park! The SF Zoo offers free admission the first Wednesday of every month to San Francisco residents. When you visit the park, you must bring proof of residency to gain free entry. Bring along a valid driver’s license, identification card, or a utility, phone, or other local bill that has your name and address plus a current photo ID to prove local residency.

The San Francisco Zoo is the largest zoological park and conservation center in Northern California and is located on Sloat Boulevard at the Great Highway. Enjoy visiting with 250 different animal species in naturalistic surroundings. This year, the zoo has several new residents, including a fuzzy red panda, a funny howler monkey, several new animal babies, and much more!

A trip to the zoo is a great way to foster early literacy skills! There are several ways to take advantage of this great opportunity to connect with your child as you enjoy a day with the animals.

During your visit…

  • Point out the different animals by name! Encourage your child to repeat the names of the animals they encounter. This is a great way to build your child’s vocabulary.
  • E is for elephant! Z is for zebra! There are plenty of opportunities to learn about letters and increase your child’s print awareness at the zoo. Point out signs you encounter along the way, and take time to read them with your child.
  • Throughout your visit, encourage your child to talk about what he or she sees. For example, take turns describing what you see. Ask your child to describe his or her favorite exhibit or favorite animal, and what they enjoyed the most during the visit!
