Become an Oakland Reading Corps Tutor!
Oakland Reading Corps tutors know growth.
They see it in the kids they work with. They grow along with them.
Right now, nearly two-thirds of Oakland third graders are reading below grade level. As a Reading Corps tutor, you’ll work with preschool children from age 3 to 5 to provide proven research-based early literacy strategies and tools and ultimately guide children along the road to English reading readiness!
This is a great opportunity for college students and recent graduates! In addition to gaining hands-on experience tutoring children, Oakland Reading Corps tutors change lives, gain experience working in local preschools and Transitional Kindergartens, and receive training form well-respected literacy experts from around the nation. These training sessions provide the knowledge and tools tutors need to be effective and confident in their ability to help children develop their literacy skills. Additional AmeriCorps trainings throughout the year cover topics such as literacy refreshers, civic engagement, leadership and other topics to enhance professional development.
